NSFAS 2027 Applications: Key Dates, How to Apply and the “Missing Middle” Student Loan

NSFAS opened its 2027 application cycle on 18 September 2026, and more than 51,000 applications came in within the first four days. The scheme says its budget is limited and that the number of applications received will determine how funding is allocated, so applying early matters. NSFAS has also said there will be no extension of its closing date. The scheme is developing a loan system for “missing middle” students, who earn too much to qualify for a bursary but still need support. The table below lists the key dates, and you can compare NCR-registered lenders on saloansonline.co.za if you need additional student finance.

What to know before you apply

  • Apply online at nsfas.org.za or through the NSFAS mobile app, which is available on Android and Apple devices.
  • Admission and funding are separate steps. Apply to your institution of choice, and apply separately to NSFAS if you need funding.
  • NSFAS loans for “missing middle” students are repayable under their terms and conditions, and the loan system is still being developed.
